Bagno di Gavorrano lies on the plains of Maremma at the foot of the medieval village of Gavorrano (Foto). The fame of Gavorrano is connected with the poet Dante Alighieri, who in his Divina Commedia told the story of the Pia deīTolomei who was shut in Castel di Pietra and eventually killed by the husband. This event is commemorated every summer; itīs called Salto della Contessa.The village is renown also for its mines; an open air theatre has been recently opened on dismissed quarry structures.
